Song of the Day 5/24/11: “Your Ex-Lover is Dead” by Stars

I saw Stars at the ACL Festival about 5 years ago… I had never heard them at the time and happened to stumble upon their performance. They opened with “Your Ex-Lover is Dead” and I was immediately taken. Besides great song and lyric writing, it’s a great example of how to make one hell of an interesting arrangement. I generally don’t like duets. In fact, this is a rare exception to my semi-strict “no duets” rule. I just love songs that create moments… instants in time that send shivers down spines or whatever it is that happens to you when you see/hear/taste/feel something great. Amy Millan’s entrance with the line, “This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin” is one such moment. “Your Ex-Lover is Dead” is simply a great song and you should listen to it.
